Real-time Reliable Multicast Protocol for Low-Bandwidth Monitoring Systems

Abstrak

This paper presents the development of Real-time Reliable Multicast Protocol (RRMP) for monitoring systems. This protocol uses the basic multicast UDP to transmit the data packets to many clients at once, thus saving the network bandwidth by not repeating the transmission to each client. To guarantee that all packets are received safely by the clients, three reliability enhancements were added: ordering, retransmission and duplication removal. Moreover, a transmission scheduling was added for providing the real-time capability. By using rate-monotonic scheduling policy, the testing showed that this protocol allows reliable realtime communication up to 73% of network utilization.
